Ardmair is 3 miles North of Ullapool on the A835.  It is a popular holiday destination, where you can find a campsite, several summer houses, and plenty of activities on the Kanaird lake and in the surrounding mountains. Right in front of the village is the small island of Martin, which you can reach by ferry.

You can go rock pooling, fishing and crabbing. Watch the red and black throated divers (loons) diving and catching fish from the Minch.  Ardmair Bay is sheltered by Isle Martin. The island itself is now owned by a community trust and it is possible to visit and tour the island.

The geology around Ardmair is some of the finest and most interesting and it is on the border of the National Geo Park. Some of the features you see here are numerous glacier valleys and features linked to the Moine Thrust which you can learn about at the Knockan Crag visitor centre (details on my Ulapool page)

The wildlife in this area includes Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles which breed around the coast. Isle Martin is a favourite nesting ground for Gulls, Fulmars, Geese and Peregrine Falcon too. When the fish move through the loch, it is not uncommon to see porpoise, dolphin and even whales coming in to hunt and feed. There are also deer in the area.

As Ardmair is so close to Ullapool, and Ullapool is a place with lots to see and do, I have created a page centred around a longer stop in this area. I've done this because many people choose this as a base for more than one night, and because I am spending an extended stay in the area this summer (2021) and I wanted to explore all the things I might do with my family on this part of the route.

If you have read my blog you will know that as well as travelling by motorhome, I like to rent cottages locally around the NC500 and delve further into the history and scenery of the area. Due to Covid 19, and the fact that I am bringing my parents as well as my children this summer, I have opted for four weeks in three cottages in Scotland. One of those weeks will be spent in Ullapool.
