Achmelvich lies just three miles north west of Lochinver. However, they are three very long miles when you take into account the challenging nature of the single track road that takes you there. Take the B869 about 1/2 a mile from the village of Lochinver on the A83.

Achmelvich is a white sandy beach. Busy in the summer as it's popular with water skiers, windsurfers and kayaks. Fishing is permitted in the Blue Flag waters and is considered safe for shallow family swimming. There is no lifeguard cover.  There is an on-site Chip Shop run by Bev Jamieson which is open from May and closes in mid-September.  Her hours are 5pm to 8pm.  During low season it is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, in high season it opens Wednesday to Sunday.  The fish is freshly delivered from Ullapool and some of the other products are sourced from the local butchers in Lochinver.

One feature that is rather strange here is the small "Hermit's Castle" which was built of concrete on a rocky headland in 1950 and is an architectural oddity that is now abandoned. This concrete folly was constructed by David Scott, an English architect who left the area shortly after completion. Free form and expressionistic, the glass windows and door have been lost.

The interior consists of a bed platform, hearth and storage shelves within a irregular-shaped interior never wider or taller than 2m. The form and material of the folly harmonise with both stoney Assynt and the Minch spreading below.

Feeling Peckish?

There is an on-site Chip Shop at the camp site which is run by Bev Jamieson. This is open this year and I will post more information when I have it.  It is open all summer and closes in mid-September.  Her hours  at the moment are 5pm to 8pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In June which is the start of the high season it will probably be open from Wednesday - Sunday so I'll update when I know more.  The fish is freshly delivered from Ullapool and some of the other products are sourced from the local butchers in Lochinver.
